Take action: Email the USPS today

Since 1927, federal law has prohibited the United States Postal Service from delivering handguns through the mail, with exceptions for members of the military, law enforcement, or licensed gun manufacturers or dealers.

Now, the Trump administration wants to change that policy to allow people legally prohibited from owning guns, including those with felony convictions and known gun traffickers, to skirt state and federal laws and receive guns through the mail. No background check, no licensing, no training.

GIFFORDS is fighting this dangerous rule change every step of the way, but we need your help.

Will you please email the USPS and tell them to NOT allow firearms through the mail? The instructions are below:

Instructions:

  • Please write and send an email to PCFederalRegister@usps.gov with a subject line of "Shipping Firearms"

Dear Postmaster General Steiner,

I write with urgency and grave concern about the Proposed Rule on the Revised Mailing Standards for Firearms (Vol.91, No.63).

I believe in the Second Amendment while ensuring that firearms laws remain clear, enforceable, and consistent. I also believe that maintaining background checks is essential to keeping dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands.

I am deeply concerned that allowing the mailing of guns via the United States Postal Services (USPS), outside of the current exemptions, would provide a tool for shady dealers, those who are legally prohibited from accessing firearms to do so, as well as providing traffickers open access to communities across our nation.

Since 1927, federal law has prohibited the United States Postal Service from carrying or delivering handguns as mail, with exceptions for members of the military, law enforcement, or for licensed gun manufacturers or dealers. This common sense prohibition has ensured that those both carry and receive mail are safer.

[INSERT YOUR PERSONAL REASON FOR ENGAGING ON THIS RULE; EACH COMMENT MUST BE DIFFERENT IN ORDER TO BE COUNTED]

At a time when communities across our nation are working to strengthen public safety responsibly, this is a dangerous, wholly unnecessary proposal. This rule places the priorities of those who would look to do harm and the gun lobby above community safety.

I respectfully urge that this rule not move forward for the safety of Americans, our families and communities.

Sincerely,
